Fit for Duty | The German Shepherd
One of the most exciting phases in the history of the German Shepherd Dog is its status as one of the biggest, and certainly the furriest, heroes in the history of war in the U.S and elsewhere. Alongside their human companions, dogs served in a variety of ways in the U.S. Military – and German Shepherds were the most famous for their military prowess and bravery. These dogs risked and often sacrificed life and limb (and often paw) to save the lives of those human comrades by whose sides they worked, saving numerous lives in the process.
While it is difficult to appreciate the magnitude of heroism expressed by German Shepherd dogs during those turbulent times, a brief history of the ways in which German Shepherd Dogs were used during World War I and World War II, as well as during later wars, might shine some light on the little-known, and certainly little-sung history of the canine contingent among our fighters. You will find that the German Shepherd was simply nothing short of astonishing when it came to its achievements as a military dog.
